Meadowlark Lemon, the 6-foot-3 spirit of the Harlem Globetrotters who charmed fans worldwide with a basketball acumen matched only by his comedic wit, died Sunday in his Scottsdale, Ariz., home, The New York Times reported early Monday. He was 83.
Lemon retired from the Globetrotters in 1978 after 22 years on the team, before becoming a Christian minister in 1986.
He was also a singer and recorded several gospel albums.
He played in more than 16,000 games for the Globetrotters and was a 2003 inductee of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
